Key Stage Two Maths Tuition

Key Stage Two is where children move from basic numeracy into much broader mathematical thinking. Being quick with number facts is important, but Maths becomes increasingly about reasoning, problem solving and understanding why a method works.

Numeracy and Maths Are Not Quite the Same Thing

Numeracy is the foundation. It includes number sense, times tables, place value, mental arithmetic, fractions, percentages and the confidence to work accurately with numbers.

Maths goes further. Children need to recognise patterns, choose methods, explain their reasoning, solve unfamiliar problems and apply what they know in different contexts.

Some children are naturally fluent with numbers but become stuck when a question is presented differently. Others understand the mathematical idea but are slowed down by insecure arithmetic. Our tutors identify which part is holding your child back and work from there.

Building Secure Foundations

Lessons may focus on number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, geometry or problem solving, depending on what your child needs.

Where there are gaps, we go back and secure them properly. Where a child is already confident, we can introduce greater challenge and encourage more flexible mathematical thinking.

The aim is not simply to teach a child how to get the right answer, but to help them understand how they got there.

Preparing for Year 6 and Secondary School

As children move through Years 5 and 6, Maths becomes increasingly demanding. They are expected to work more independently, explain their reasoning and tackle multi-step problems.

We can support SATs preparation where needed, but the focus remains on building skills that will last beyond a test.

Strong numeracy, secure methods and confident problem solving can make the transition into secondary Maths far easier, particularly during those important first weeks when new schools are assessing where children should be placed.

Confidence With Numbers

Maths can become a confidence issue very quickly. Once a child starts to believe they are simply “not good at Maths”, they can become reluctant to attempt harder questions.

One-to-one tuition gives your child space to slow down, ask questions and understand the parts that have previously felt confusing.

Some families choose a focused half-term block, while others prefer regular weekly or fortnightly support. The aim is to help your child become more fluent with numbers, stronger in their mathematical thinking and increasingly confident in the classroom.
